Workshop Overview and Goals
To focus attention and discussion on the topic of validation methods, the organizing committee has constructed challenge problems in three disciplines: Thermal, Structural Mechanics, and Structural Dynamics. The three problems have similar features of validation in their design. The challenge problems address validation through a hierarchy of experiments.
A tasking document provides an overview of the motivation for the workshop, features addressed in the challenge problems, and specific tasks that we invite you to address in working the challenge problems. To allow the workshop to focus on the validation methodology, all experimental data is synthetic, i.e., it was generated through simulation, and the models are easy to evaluate. As is the case in real experimental applications, the underlying “truth” model used to generate the synthetic experimental date will not be divulged. Furthermore, authors will not be judged on their results; the workshop is not, in any way, a competition. The goal is to discuss and share validation methodologies; specifically, we hope to gain insight into methodologies to do the following
